St Mary's Church Choir

The choir sings each Sunday at 10.30am.

Contact: The Choir

There has been a choir at St. Mary’s Barnard Castle since 1882 and the present choir comprises 10 adults and 6 trebles. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and sings a wide repertoire of music, ranging from C16th to the present day.

As well as singing at the Parish Church, the choir visits Whorlton and Kinninvie for Harvest and Christmas services. The choir also participates in the Annual Diocesan Choirs Festival, which is held in Durham Cathedral, and other local RSCM events.

Adult practice: each Sunday before the service.

Junior Choir at the bowling alley, Christmas 2002

The Junior Choir meets on Tuesdays during term time at 4.00pm. Children join the choir once they are in Year 3 at school. Choristers can be members both of the choir and the Sunday School.

The junior choir occasionally sings without adult support, most notably at the Carol services and the Christingle services.

Junior Choir outings are arranged as an incentive for good behaviour (!!) and a reward for excellent singing (!!). Some choristers work towards the RSCM Dean's awards.

Members of the Junior Choir received their Dean's awards at Durham Cathedral (July 2003) and their light blue ribbons in church.
