Kinninvie Mission Church |
|
Kinninvie, hardly even a hamlet, and the farms nearby were graciously given their own Mission Church by the previous Lord Barnard in 1914. Gifts of communion vessels, hymn books and prayer books were made by other generous Staindrop benefactors. All that was asked of the local men was that they lead the stone from nearby Bail Hill Quarry. Large families and large farm workforces meant that services, then held weekly, were well attended. So too, were social activities as the chancel can be closed off. Only two marriages (by special licence) have been celebrated here, but many christenings have taken place. Several winters, services have had to be cancelled because of the Mission Church’s exposed position causing snow drifts. Currently services are held on the last Sunday of the month, Evensong and Communion alternately.
