St Mary's Prayer Group

To clasp the hands in prayer is a beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world- the theologian, Karl Barth.

A church is nothing if it does not believe that it is possible in some way to relate to God. We express this relationship in worship and prayer.

Each week our prayer group meets to bring before God the concerns of the parish and its parishioners. Prayers are requested through our visitor’s book in church and requests can be made through this site. Prayer differs from magic: more important than ‘getting our own way’ is sharing our concern with a Father who loves us and will carry us… come what may.

The Parish unites for prayer at its services week by week. All of our church council meetings include an extended period of prayer as we seek to honour God in all our decision making. Prayer diaries link our prayers with those of other Christians within and beyond Durham diocese. A Julian group meets monthly for contemplative prayer.

On Maundy Thursday an ‘all night vigil’ is kept in church by members of the congregation. In September a half-day of prayer offers the life of the parish to God and helps us to realign our life with His.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
