Looking at Barnard Castle today it is difficult to imagine that the town was once a significant industrial centre.

Workers were housed in cramped, dirty tenements near the factories and this ultimately lead to an outbreak of cholera in 1849.

During the epidemic, the Reverend George Dugard worked tirelessly looking after the sick and dying and contributed to the Public Health report which was undertaken in the town.

As a result of the report, improvements were made to the sanitary conditions of the whole town, as it became evident that such a devastating disease should not be allowed to claim the lives of so many people again.
