Whorlton Church traces its history back to the Middle Ages as an offshoot of the Parish of Gainford.  Lists of clergy record the names of those who served the parish as far back as 1501 and records of baptisms (dating from 1626), burials (1669) and marriages (1713) are held in the County Record Office. The church and churchyard are still in use.
There are fortnightly services and occasional baptisms, weddings and funerals.

A new church was built on the site of the old in 1853.

Links with Barnard Castle Parish have grown down the years: in 1994 the two Parishes united to become one, served by one Parochial Church Council.

Although no longer a separate parish, residents within the village regard the church as an important asset. The church council is seeking ways in which the church can be used for a wider range of activities: concerts, poetry readings etc. and how the church can welcome tourists and pilgrims alike.
